To reduce the complexity of installing extensions, the smart folks at aescripts + aeplugins built a really awesome Extension Installer that will make your life a lot easier to get up and running.

  • Drag the .zxp file into ZXP Installer

  • Close and reopen After Effects

  • Open the Window menu, find the Extension group and you should see the new tool

Scripts with a dockable panel and buttons and switches to click on must be installed in the ScriptUI Panels folder:

OSX: Applications\After Effects<version>\Scripts\ScriptUI Panels Windows: Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects <version>\Support Files\Scripts\ScriptUI Panels

  • Copy the .jsx or .jsxbin file into the ScriptUI Panels folder

  • Restart After Effects

  • Under the Window menu will be a list of all installed scripts

  • Clicking the name will open the panel

CC2019 and newer

In newer versions of After Effects, it is now possible install RubberHose 2 and other scripts without digging through your hard drive.

File > Scripts > Install Script UI Panel…

Restart Ae and RubberHose 2 will be available in the top Window menu at the bottom of that list.

Updating

There's a bit of confusion when Adobe says it's updating After Effects. It's actually installing a new application, which means scripts need to be installed for this new app. Copy the scripts out of the old version of Ae's Scripts/ScriptUI Panels folder to the new version's Scripts/ScriptUI Panels folder and restart AE.
